The History of Locksmithing
Locksmithing is believed to be an art and a profession of producing and designing locks and other hardware mechanisms. The main goal is to secure objects, cabinets, buildings, storage facilities and other places.
Throughout the history, locksmithing also went through a lot of changes. It was also believed that locksmiths were talented and had the knowledge in regard with shaping metals. They were also creating individual pieces of locks using their hands.
To give you a brief understanding of its history, it actually started in Babylon and Ancient Egypt four thousand years ago. At this time, locksmiths designed all wooden devices with the use of a tin tumbler principle applicable in preventing any movement of door bars.
And, the pins could only be moved with the use of cumbersome wooden and large key. As per the oldest type of locks, they were discovered in the Assyrian Empire. Even historians and scientists agreed on this wooden lock designed in 7o4 BC.
With the advanced metallurgy in the eighteenth century in Europe, it was also the time when finally, locksmiths were able to create more reliable keys and locks. Famous locksmiths improved their designs especially during the fall of the Roman Empire.
The arrival of industrial mass production and successful designs even resulted to a drastic change in locksmithing. Industrial locks are offered at their cheapest prices. Locksmiths also specialized in two different fields- repairmen of industrial locks and repairmen of replicate keys for people who want locks for their personal use.
In the 1940’s, many locksmiths became an invaluable commodity. At this era, locksmiths did not actually have the time to improve in the field. They were also entirely focused on the war. They were also drafted into the locksmith while some continued working as locksmiths. Some also passed on their knowledge and skills to their family members. This way, they may carry it on in the entire generations. And since there was no progress in this period, the same design and style of locks continued to exist.
At the present time, locksmithing is being taught in trade schools and other engineering departments across the countries. For instance, Australia provides a degree in locksmithing. This is their only way of being a locksmith. As long as they passed one of the courses, they will learn more about it and be most successful in it.
Locksmiths are more knowledgeable in the repair of locks. They are also great in assessing any potential breaks. They implement the best equipment along with the use of various locks security measure. The good thing about them is that they work right from their shops. They are doing all door-related work such as frame repair, closer, electric strike and hinges. Others are creating and designing layers of locks that help protect intrusion or theft. Some of them are working as security consultants in a car company or a car lock company.
Truly, locksmithing is a special and unique skill that must be obtained and learned from the experts. These experts should be well-known and experienced enough in the field!
